Makeup Makes you Look More Competent & Likeable
a study says

Want more respect, trust and affection from your co-workers?

Wearing makeup — but not gobs of Gaga-conspicuous makeup — apparently can help. It increases people’s perceptions of a woman’s likability, her competence and (provided she does not overdo it) her trustworthiness, according to a study, which also confirmed what is obvious: that cosmetics boost a woman’s attractiveness.

Urgent Reasons to Go Gluten Free
6 reasons

Gluten is a protein found in most grains eaten in America and all over Europe.

For most people gluten intake will come from wheat products, but as well from barley, triticale, rye, oats, spelt. Oats are supposed by nature to be gluten free, however, they get cross-contaminated by being carried in trucks that also carry wheat. You should also know that American strands of wheat have the highest content of gluten in the World.

Gluten has been isolated as a risk factor is so many diseases, that is almost impossible to count them all.
7 Ways to Improve Your Empathy For Others

How To Improve Your Empathy For Others
7 ways

In order to begin to develop empathic ability, it is essential to care how someone feels.

When we have compassion, we attune to the needs and feelings of the person we want to help. When we resist the energies, need and feelings of another, it is pretty hard to really open your self to them enough to know what is going on.

Today's College Kids are 40 Percent Less Empathetic, Study Finds

Today’s college students are 40-percent less empathetic than those of the 1980s and 1990s, says a University of Michigan study that analyzed the personality tests of 13,737 students over 30 years.

The influx of callous reality TV shows and the astronomical growth of social networking and texting – technologies that allow people to tune others out when they don’t feel like engaging – may be to blame, the authors hypothesize.

“Young adults today comprise one of the most self-concerned, competitive, confident, and individualistic cohorts in recent history,” the researchers write, referring to the “Me Generation.”

The Poor are More Empathetic Than the Rich, Study Says

The Poor are More Empathetic Than the Rich
new study says

Rich people are less empathetic, less altruistic and more selfish than those of the lower classes, according to new research from University of California at Berkeley and at San Francisco.

In an article published by the Association for Psychological Science, co-authors Michael W. Kraus of UC-San Francisco and Dacher Keltner and Paul K. Piff of the UC-Berkely found people from lower classes were better at reading other people's emotions, which is one scientific measure of empathy. If you can't recognize what someone is going through, they argue, it's hard to respond to their needs.

The Truth About Hair and Why Native Americans Kept Their Hair Long

Why Native Americans Kept Their Hair Long
the truth about hair

This information about hair has been hidden from the public since the Vietnam War.

Our culture leads people to believe that hair style is a matter of personal preference, that hair style is a matter of fashion and/or convenience, and that how people wear their hair is simply a cosmetic issue. Back in the Vietnam war however, an entirely different picture emerged, one that has been carefully covered up and hidden from public view.

In the early nineties, Sally [name changed to protect privacy] was married to a licensed psychologist who worked at a VA Medical hospital. He worked with combat veterans with PTSD, post traumatic stress disorder. Most of them had served in Vietnam.

Sally said, "I remember clearly an evening when my husband came back to our apartment on Doctor's Circle carrying a thick official looking folder in his hands. Inside were hundreds of pages of certain studies commissioned by the government. He was in shock from the contents. What he read in those documents completely changed his life. From that moment on my conservative middle of the road husband grew his hair and beard and never cut them again. What is more, the VA Medical center let him do it, and other very conservative men in the staff followed his example.

Only oxygen is more essential than water in sustaining the life of all living organisms.

Human beings can live for several weeks without food, but only a few days without water. The quality of your tissues, their performance, and their resistance to disease and injury are linked to the quality and quantity of water you drink. Let's examine which water source is best.

Treat Spider Veins in the Legs Naturally

Treat Spider Veins in the Legs
with help from nature

As 75 percent of people over the age of sixty-five know, veins that have become swollen, raised, and snakelike are called spider veins.

If one or more of the one-way valves in superficial veins no longer functions normally, the blood headed back to the heart can pool or even flow backward. This stretches the vein and makes it impossible for other nearby valves to close properly as well. The vein becomes swollen and kinked, and blood stagnates in the vein. The veins turn purple, dark blue, or cranberry in color.

Spider veins are most common on the thighs, the backs of the calves, the insides of the legs, and the ankles. In addition to being cosmetically displeasing, spider veins often feel heavy, burn, itch, or throb, and the feet and ankles can swell.

The legs may feel hot and heavy and become sensitive to pressure. Symptoms generally worsen during the day, especially with prolonged standing.

The severity of the appearance of the Spider Veins does not necessarily correspond to the severity of the associated pain and soreness.

People with only a few visible varicosities can suffer from severe pain from them.

Spider veins run in families, and affect women more frequently because of premenstrual or menopausal hormones, birth control pills, and pregnancy. In fact, they occur in 40 percent of pregnant women. Other factors that contribute to spider veins include advancing age, muscular atrophy in the legs, poor circulation, smoking, prolonged bed rest, overweight, lack of exercise, prolonged standing or sitting, tight clothing, high heels, excessive heavy lifting, and chronic constipation.

Detox Endocrine Disruptors For Better Health
7/26/2011 8:47:09 AM
Detox Your Hormone System
endocrine disruptors

Your endocrine system is one of the most sensitive communication networks — it influences all aspects of your health and well-being, including your reproductive potential, cognitive function, thyroid and metabolism, digestion and hormonal balance.

How an individual reacts to hormonally active chemicals varies, but one thing is certain: never before have there been so many diverse, humanmade and unregulated synthetics at work in our bodies. Many now think that we are the guinea pigs in the largest uncontrolled science experiment in history.

Endrocrine Disrputors

An endocrine disruptor is a synthetic compound that mimics a natural hormone when it is absorbed by the body. It can turn on, turn off, or change normal signals. It can have the effect of altering normal hormone levels, triggering excessive action, or completely blocking a natural response. Any other bodily function controlled by hormones can also be affected.

We are often asked about plant estrogens, “Aren’t they endocrine disruptors? Don’t they mimic estrogen?” Much research has shown that phytoestrogens, such as those found in soy, are not disruptive to the natural workings of the endocrine system. The reason behind this is that the human body has co-evolved over time with plants and generally moderates the impact of phytoestrogens through an adaptogenic response. Some plant estrogens are naturally neutralized, others are easily excreted, and most do not accumulate in body tissue (unlike synthetic compounds and heavy metals). The half-life of a phytoestrogen is measured in minutes, while the half-life of various synthetic compounds, like DDT, may be years or even decades.

Humanmade chemicals that are known or suspected to influence the endocrine system are everywhere. All the latest and greatest, next-best-things that we now accept as “however-did-we-live-without-them” inventions are made with these chemicals. They make our plastic products softer and easier to handle, our cosmetic creams and lotions smoother and longer-lasting, and our clothes and furnishings inflammable. They are used in clothing dye (especially denim!), cars and computer casings, Teflon coatings, and disinfectant bleaches. They are diffused throughout the atmosphere by the burning of industrial waste and leach into groundwater from landfills. Scientists are concerned because these chemicals biomagnify in the food chain.

Fatty Foods Get You High

Fatty Foods Get You High
Endocannabinoids

Fatty foods can make you feel stoned, and then, just like actually being stoned, can give you the munchies, according to a new study.

Apparently, fatty foods trigger the body to produce "a natural feel-good chemical" called endocannabinoids, which produces effects similar to pot. That part sounds pretty alright—getting stoned off of French fries?!—but the catch is that these endocannabinoids will then drive you to pig out even more. Endocannabinoids were discovered when scientists learned that the human body can actually create its own cannabinoids, which are tiny little molecules that reduce pain and anxiety. For what it's worth, you can also trigger your endocannabinoids by exercising, which isn't as much fun as eating a big bowl of guacomole.

Is Facebook the Leading Cause of Relationship Problems?
lawyers say yes

Facebook is a top cause of relationship trouble, says US lawyers.

When Facebook gets involved, relationships can quickly fall apart – as Hosni Mubarak and Muammar Gaddafi have discovered.

A new survey by the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers found that some two-thirds of divorce lawyers cite Facebook as “the ‘primary source’ of evidence in divorce proceedings,” and “a leading cause of relationship trouble.”

Foods That May Cause 5 Specific Cancers

Foods that May Cause Specific Cancers
5 cancers

You are what you eat. It is generally accepted that diet is one of the major causes of human cancer.

In 1997 the American Cancer Institute stated that about 1/3 of all cancers are related to what we eat and another 30% results from smoking. It would seem logical that if we watch what we eat and stop smoking we can substantially reduce our risk of getting cancer.

The main diet-related cancers can be categorized into 3 broad classes:

1. Fat-related cancers : in the breast, ovary, prostate, large bowel, endometrium etc.
2. Alcohol-related cancers : in the liver, upper digestive tract (oropharynx and oesophagus) etc..
3. Poor or improper nutrition : in the stomach and oesophagus etc.

Prostate Cancer
The prostate is a gland that helps your body produce fluid that carries sperm from the body. Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer to affect men.  Affecting 1 in 6 men. In 2011, more than 240,000 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Early diagnosis and treatment can help increase your chance for full, stable recovery. If you do not have prostate cancer, eating a healthy diet that helps you reach or maintain a healthy weight may lower your risk for acquiring it.

Foods to avoid or may contribute to prostate cancer:

Dairy products, low-fat milk, red meat, eggs, poultry with skin, calcium supplements, high intake of fat and calorie, sugar.

Amazing fact:
Tomato-based foods can reduce a man's risk of prostrate cancer by up to 35 percent

Good Posture Equals Good Health

Good Posture Equals Good Health
6 benefits

Bad posture is a modern day health epidemic that is much worse than most people naturally assume.

Posture is the window into your spine. The spine has a powerful relationship with the brain, spinal cord, and overall organ function. This intimate connection means that poor posture and spinal health will lead to an overall decrease in brain and organ function.

Nobel Prize recipient Dr. Roger Sperry says that the spine is the motor that drives the brain. According to his research "90% of the stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated by the movement of the spine." Only 10% of our brain's energy goes into thinking, metabolism, immunity, and healing. Sperry demonstrated that 90% of brain energy goes into processing and maintaining the body's relationship with gravity.

One of the worst types of health problems people experience is a loss of the natural curves of their spine. Ideally, we should have a 40-45 degree curve in our neck that many chiropractors and neurosurgeons refer to as "the arc of life." This curve helps to protect the brain stem and the spinal canal for the spinal cord and nerves that travel to every region of our body.

Having a Bad Job Can Be Worse Than None At All
study finds

Although in the current economy being unemployed feels like the worst thing in the world, researchers have found something even worse — being stuck in a bad job.

Australian National University researchers have found that, from a mental health perspective, you may be better off being unemployed rather than being in a bad job.

"Moving from unemployment to a poor-quality job offered no mental health benefit, and in fact was more detrimental to mental health than remaining unemployed," says the lead author of the study, Peter Butterworth, Ph.D., a senior research fellow at the Centre for Mental Health Research at the Australian National University, in Canberra.

The volunteers rated their jobs based on four factors: stress and overall job demands, control over their own work, job security, and whether or not they thought the pay was fair.

The Incredible Healing Reishi Mushroom

The Incredible Reishi Mushroom
mushroom of immortality

Reishi Mushroom (Ganoderma lucidum) has been used extensively  in Asia for its extraordinary health-giving benefits.

Known in Japan as the ‘phantom mushroom’ because it can be so very difficult to find. Reishi is so rare that only about 10 mushrooms would be found growing on about 100,000 trees. Reishi is called the “mushroom of immortality” in China because of the Chinese belief that it promotes longevity. It is one of the oldest medicinal mushrooms, being used for more than four thousand years.

Studies done in Japan, the USA, China and the UK over the past thirty years repeatedly show that taking Reishi has resulted in a reduction in disease, every day ailments and an improvement in the body's condition. Reishi has benefits for every organ system in the body.

The studies also support the use of Reishi as a general tonic. It normalizes the body's organs and functions and maintains health. Called an adaptogen, Reishi helps the body adapt to various stresses like sleep deprivation, temperature, toxin exposure, infection, psychological stress and trauma.

Scientists isolated approximately 400 different bioactive compounds in reishi including triterpenoids, nucleotides, polysaccharides, steroids, sterols, phenols, fatty acids, proteins, amino acids, and trace elements. The triterpenoid ganoderic acids are among the most studied component of reishi. Different types of ganoderic acid have been found to exhibit therapeutic properties.

Reishi has been claimed to be anti-allergin, antioxidant, analgesic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antiviral, antiparasitic, cardiovascular, antidiabetic, immunomodulating, hepatoprotective, hypotensive and hypertensive, kidney and nerve tonic, and sexual potentiating. Reishi is used to treat a variety of disorders and promote vitality; it works as an antioxidant against free radicals, protects against the effects of radiation and has anti-inflammatory effects. Reishi intensifies the body's free radical scavenging ability and is especially effective against harmful hydroxyl radicals. Reishi is such a strong hydroxyl radical scavenger that its actions continue even after it is absorbed and metabolized.

Triterpenes (fatty acids) in reishi have benefits including cholesterol inhibition, reduction in blood pressure and a steroidal action which increases the feeling of wellbeing and resistance to stress. They are also responsible for balancing the blood sugar, reducing the "allergy response", and protecting liver damage from toxins.
Green tea and Tai Chi Strengthen Bones

Green Tea and Tai Chi Strengthen Bones
new study shows

Drinking green tea and practicing Taichi may promote bone health of postmenopausal women and reduce the risk of inflammation, a new study suggests.

The study, conducted by researchers at the Laura W. Bush Institute for Women's Health at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, focused on postmenopausal women and investigated the potential for green tea to work synergistically with Taichi in enhancing bone strength of postmenopausal women.

Originating as a martial art in China, Taichi is a mind-body exercise that utilizes slow, gentle movements to build strength and flexibility, as well as deep breathing and relaxation, to move qi, or vital energy, throughout the body.

Green tea, historically consumed in the Orient and now an international mainstay, is chock full of compounds called polyphenols known for their potent antioxidant activity. Dozens of epidemiological (observational) studies have shown that people who consume the highest levels of green tea polyphenols (GTP) tend to have lower risks of several chronic degenerative diseases such as cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis. These findings have been followed up with animal studies, including some conducted by Shen, suggesting that the mechanism behind this correlation may have to do with lowering chronic levels of inflammation.

Green Tea, Cinnamon, and Elderberry could fight HIV/AIDS

Green Tea, Cinnamon, and Elderberry
could fight HIV/AIDS

Research found that chemical components in elderberry, cinnamon, and green tea extracts might be a new tool in the drive to fight HIV/AIDS.

Scientists, in an article published in the journal Antiviral Chemistry & Chemotherapy are suggesting that extracts from the natural products can attach themselves to the HIV virus and block it from infecting cells.

Collaboration between the University of Miami Leonard Miller School of Medicine and HerbalScience Group produced this study. The study examined the effect of these subtances on the HIV virus' ability to infect cells.

Scientists took elderberry extract and compared its antiviral activities to extracts of green tea and cinnamon. The researchers were able to identify specific compounds in each of the three extracts that blocked HIV infection in cells. Two specific compounds in the extracts were particularly effective in blocking HIV. What's more they didn't find the extracts to have any toxic effects, even at the high dosages they used in their experiments.

Repel Bugs and Mosquitoes Safely
without DEET

For those of you who have traveled in groups, you may have noticed the curious insect bite phenomenon whereby there’s always at least one person who escapes untouched and at least one other who is awake and scratching until sunrise.

For those of you in the latter category, let’s take a look at what the causes are and what you can do to keep the little beggars away. The modern response is simply to apply insect repellent and then plod on as usual. However the main active ingredient in many deterrents is DEET (N,N‐Diethyl‐meta‐toluamide) which can be a potential skin irritant ‐ especially when you apply it to damaged or sun burnt skin. You might therefore want to use a more natural solution ‐ which can be just as effective.

Eliminate Your Seasonal Allergies
naturally

Seasonal allergies are one of the most common medical problems that occur mostly during the seasons of spring, summer and fall.

Seasonal allergies are non-discriminatory and can affect people of any age. Seasonal allergies will vary in different regions depending on the time of the year and the types of plants that are in the area. Most pollen levels tend to be the highest in the morning. Some of the most common seasonal allergies include allergies to weeds, grasses, flowers and trees. Certain types of outdoor mold spores can also cause seasonal allergies. Seasonal allergies are often referred to as allergic rhinitis, or hay fever, which is a collection of allergic reactions that irritate the eyes and nose.

Watermelon's Healing Benefits
6/9/2011 8:45:08 AM

Watermelon is a Healing Summer Fruit
cancer/skin/eye health

Watermelon are one of the healthiest fruits.

Native to Southern Africa and now cultivated in almost all countries with temperate or tropical climates. Watermelons can weigh anywhere from less than a pound and up to more than two hundred pounds. They also can be in red, yellow, orange, and white colors when in ripened stage. Rich in electrolytes and water content, melons are nature’s gift to beat tropical summer thirst.

Nutrients in a Watermelon

Sweet, juicy watermelon is actually packed with some of the most important antioxidants in nature. Watermelon is an excellent source of
vitamin C and a very good source of vitamin A, notably through its concentration of beta-carotene. Pink watermelon is also a source of the potent carotenoid antioxidant, lycopene. These powerful antioxidants travel through the body neutralizing free radicals. As a matter of fact, high intakes of vitamin C and beta-carotene have been shown in a number of scientific studies to reduce the risk of heart disease, reduce the airway spasm that occurs in asthma, reduce the risk of colon cancer, and alleviate some of the symptoms of osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. A cup of watermelon provides 24.3% of the daily value for vitamin C, and, through its beta-carotene, 11.1% of the DV for vitamin A.
Are Whole Food Supplements Better?
6/8/2011 7:37:32 AM

Are Whole Food Supplements Better?
real or synthetic

The answer is yes.

Foods heal illness, provide our cells with energy, prevent disease and build our immunity.
Only whole, natural foods have this life-supporting power. Not synthetic vitamins, and not drugs. Whether you are suffering from a common cold, arthritis, asthma, heart disease, cancer, mouth sores, diabetes, prostate problems, PMS, osteoporosis, joint pain, headaches, back pain or any other symptom or disease, you absolutely need the full range of nutrients that are only found in nature’s real, whole, pure foods.

What are Whole Food Supplements?

Whole food supplements are what their name suggests: Supplements made from concentrated whole foods. The vitamins found within these supplements are not isolated. They are highly complex structures that combine a variety of enzymes, co-enzymes, antioxidants, trace elements, activators and many other unknown or undiscovered factors all working together synergistically, to enable this vitamin complex to do its job in your body.

This is what it says on my bottle of whole food multi vitamin, "Foodstate concentrates made from fresh, raw foods deliver 100% food nutrients and protective antioxidants - as nature intended. They are a natural source of vital phytonutrients, including CoenzymeQ10, SOD, glutathione, enzymes, lipoic acid, amino acids and beta glucans..."

Whole food supplements do not have as much for quantity in them, but they do have the most important part…THE FUNCTION. They are composed of everything they need to function in the body and be recognized in the body. They build the body up and strengthen it.

How to Protect and Heal the Liver
6/7/2011 7:20:57 AM

How to Protect and Heal Your Liver
with lifestyle

The liver can do 500 functions.

This is one powerful organ, the one organ in the body that is capable of regenerating itself. The liver controls your health and longevity and your ability to bounce back from infection.

What Does my Liver do?

The liver is truly the master organ of the immune system, producing chemicals to combat viruses (including the HIV virus) and bacteria, supporting immune function, and producing antihistamines to neutralize substances that promote the growth of cancer. When the liver is not functioning properly - and is over-blocked by toxins - the body's immune system is severely weakened leading to chronic illness.

The liver's role is to break down and neutralize a wide array of potentially toxic chemicals, including such things as food additives, environmental pollutants, petroleum, paint and solvents. Even many natural substances, such as hormones, need to be broken down.

It stores certain vitamins, minerals (including iron) and sugars, regulates fat stores, and controls the production and excretion of cholesterol. The bile, produced by liver cells, helps you to digest your food and absorb important nutrients. It neutralizes and destroys poisonous substances and metabolizes alcohol. It helps you resist infection and removes bacteria from the blood stream, helping you to stay healthy.

Arguably, your liver isn't just your silent partner – it's your best friend.

How To Heal Your Liver

use milk thistle
Milk Thistle is an example of a potent standardized herb that contains a minimum of 80% silymarin, the active nutrient that gives milk thistle its great effectiveness for the treatment of liver hepatitis or liver disease cirrhosis. Milk Thistle (Silybum maianum) seeds are approved as a natural treatment for damaged liver, inflammatory liver pain conditions and liver diseases such as cirrhosis, hepatitis, and fatty liver disease caused by alcohol and other toxins.

The Top 13 Detox Foods

The Top 13 Detox Foods
to cleanse

Many different substances are needed for good detox function.

Nutrients like vitamins, minerals, amino acids and phytochemicals (natural plant chemicals) all play a role in the intricate processes that make up your detox system. They can be found in a wide variety of foods. Some contain more than others so here are my top 13 detox foods.

Much research has found that the key to a decrease in cancer and degenerative diseases lies in a diet high in plant foods. Plant foods vary in the nutrients they contain so eating a wide variety of them is important. There has been an abundance of published research into the benefits of cruciferous vegetables on the detox pathways. Some times they are referred to as superfoods because they are loaded with substances that help detoxify those nasty toxic chemicals that damage your cells.

The Top 13 Detox Foods

cruciferous vegetables
Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, turnips, kale, watercress all contain important phytochemicals that are released when they are chopped, chewed, fermented, cooked or digested. The substances released then break down into sulphorophanes, indole-3-carbinol and D-glucarate which all have a specific effect on Phase 1 and phase 2 detox.

Broccoli is good but broccoli sprouts are even better as they contain 20 times more sulfurophane. They are becoming easier to find in the supermarkets. Add them to your salads.

Women: Would You Shave Your Face for Beautiful Skin?

Women: Would you Shave Your face
for beautiful skin?

Japanese women have been doing it for centuries. Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe both used it as a beauty secret.

Female facial shaving for exfoliation and beauty is a practice that has been around for a very long time. In Japan, girls as young as 9 learn how to do it and they continue the practice to keep gorgeous skin.

The first and most common misunderstanding when it comes to shaving is that the hair will grow back darker and thicker. While this is indeed possible, the hair will only thicken and darken up when the skin becomes stressed by invasive shaving techniques and chemically inappropriate product ingredients.

However, when the skin is prepped and protected with biologically appropriate products, the sharp edge of a seemingly benign cartridge razor blade turns into the ultimate skin resurfacing tool.

Beauty Sleep Really Does Make You More Beautiful
scientific research says

It's not just an old wives' tale: A recent study says that sleep really can make you appear more attractive and healthy.

Swedish researchers say there's an important link between sleep and your physical appearance. In a study published in December 2010 in the British Medical Journal, researcher John Axelsson and his team at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm found that sleep-deprived individuals appear less healthy, more tired, and less attractive than those who have received a full night's worth of sleep.

"Sleep is the body's natural beauty treatment," Axelsson said. "It's probably more effective than any other treatment you could buy."

This is the first scientific evidence that beauty sleep, in fact, does make a big difference on your looks. The study looked at 23 participants between the ages of 18 to 31. They were photographed between 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. on two occasions, once after normal sleep and once after being deprived of sleep. Smokers were excluded from the research and no alcohol was allowed for two days prior to the experiment.

The photos were rated by 65 untrained observers who graded the images in these three categories -- how healthy, attractive, and tired the individuals appeared. On the whole, the participants were judged to be worse-off after sleep deprivation, in all categories, and the scientists believe the effects would be even more dramatic in person, when factors like blink rate and drowsiness could be observed.

Sleep Before 10 PM for Amazing Health
5/30/2011 11:45:52 AM

Go to Sleep Before 10 PM
for amazing health benefits

Early sleeping habit provides many great physical and psychological benefits in regard to health and beauty.

Our human bodies, like Mother Nature, function according to natural cycles, body rhythms commonly called the internal body clock or the biological clock. Disruptions of the natural functions of our biological clock due to improper habits and incorrect sleeping patterns cause many different diseases. When our bodies are out of balance and not functioning in harmony with nature, nothing seems to feel right. This is because hormones, chemicals and neurotransmitters that determine our energy levels, vitality, and how we feel, sleep and eat are out of sync. In other words, we are imbalanced and out of tune with our biological clock and going against the natural harmony established by Mother Nature. Prior to the widespread use of electricity people would go to bed shortly after sunset, as most animals do and which Nature intended for humans as well. The best hours of sleep for your body are the hours of 10 pm – 6 am.

One is likely to feel more refreshed with 5 hours of sleep between 10 pm and 3 am than with 5 (or more) hours sleep that do not begin until 3 am. This is the reason why we still feel tired despite sleeping between 8 and 10 hours when we go to bed much later than 10 pm.

Treat Pink Eye with Natural Methods

Treat Pink Eye Effectively & Safely
with natural remedies

Conjunctivitis or "pink eye" is inflammation of the conjuctiva, the mucous membranes that line the inner surface of the eyelids and the front of the eyeball.

It usually affects both the eyes but does not effect the vision. Symptoms may include feeling as if sand is in the eye, tearing, burning or itching and extreme sensitivity to light. The eyes get red and the lid and the surface of the eye may get swollen. There may also be watery mucus secretion, in the case of bacterial infection a thick discharge may be coming out of the eyes. The discharge in some cases may be so strong that you may wake up in the morning with the crust over the eye and thinking that your eyes are nearly glued shut.

What Causes Pink Eye

Sometimes, the cause of pink eye comes from sources you wouldn’t normally associate with inflamed eyes, while other factors play an obvious role. To make matters worse, you could encounter more than one ailment at a time when pink eye strikes, including blepharoconjunctivitis (when conjunctivitis combines with blepharitis inflammation of the eyelids) or keratoconjunctivitis (a mixture of pink eye and keratitis inflamed corneas). The most common causes of pink eye includes:

VIRUSES AND BACTERIA Rubbing or touching the eyes is one of the most common ways that people can spread bacteria or transfer a virus. People with colds are also susceptible to contracting viral conjunctivitis. Viral pink eye should go away in about 10 days by itself.
STD A sexually transmitted disease, such as chlamydia, can cause conjunctivitis.
ALLERGIES Also known as allergic conjunctivitis, direct contact with an allergen can bring about a case of pink eye. Sometimes, the allergen makes contact with your eyes through the air like when pollen takes to flight during the changing seasons. Other times, the allergen may adhere to your hands and become transferred when you touch your eyes. Typical allergens include pet hair, fungal spores, and dust.
CHLORINE Avid swimmers have been known to suffer pink eye, due to the chlorine found in pool water.
SHAMPOO The irritating ingredients found in most shampoos can cause a case of pink eye to erupt.
IRRITATIONS Anything known to cause irritation to the eyes can trigger conjunctivitis. Dirt and dust can become trapped in the eye, creating the perfect environment for the condition to strike. Sit too close to a cigarette smoker and some people react with irritated eyes. A chemical splash can also cause conjunctivitis to develop.
FOREIGN OBJECTS A wayward pencil, finger poke, or paper cut to the eye can all cause pink eye.

Ways to Treat Pink Eye

calendula
Use calendula (also called marigold) in bacterial or viral conjunctivitis to reduce itching and inflammation, heal and soothe. It's an antiseptic perfect for irritation due to pollutants and allergies. Use it as a local compress and eyewash. It is available in eye drops as well.

Boost Hylauronic Acid With Food

How to Boost Hylauronic Acid in the Skin
using food

In Yuzuri Hara, a village in Japan, ten percent of the population is 85 or older. Diseases of aging, such as cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's, are virtually unknown. People rarely see a doctor and their skin rarely shows signs of aging. They live long, healthy active lives.

As reported on the ABC News program 20/20, researchers have discovered the ‘magical’ ingredient that appears to keep people in Yuzuri Hara young. It is hyaluronic acid, which is found naturally in the carbohydrate foods that are unique to the hilly terrain of this village.

In fact a large pharmaceutical company in Japan began Research & Development on a pill supplement containing HA. When they tested the pills on one thousand individuals, around half of them reported smoother skin and even improved eyesight. Hyaluronic acid has also proven effective in lubricating arthritic joints as well,
as certain studies have shown positive results from injections into the joints of Hyaluronic Acid, a component of the bodies own lubricant fluid, that may delay the need for a joint replacement
.

What Does Hyaluronic Acid Do?

Hyaluronic acid is a natural and essential moisture component of your skin. It lies within your connective tissue layers and acts as a support to your collagen and elastin fibers. It helps your skin stay plump and smooth because of its ability to absorb up to 1000 times its weight in water. HA also supports the formation and maintenance of collagen, an important connective tissue. Collagen degradation is believed to cause a decrease in skin tone and elasticity.

How to Cope With Loss Part 4

The Unbearable Pain of Losing a Child
part 4: how to cope with loss

Children are not supposed to die...

Parents expect to see their children grow and mature. Ultimately, parents expect to die and leave their children behind. This is the natural course of life events, the life cycle continuing as it should. The loss of a child is the loss of innocence, the death of the most vulnerable and dependent. The death of a child signifies the loss of the future, of hopes and dreams, of new strength, and of perfection.

It is frequently said that the grief of bereaved parents is the most intense grief known. When a child dies, parents feel that a part of them has died, that a vital and core part of them has been ripped away. Bereaved parents indeed do feel that the death of their child is "the ultimate deprivation". The grief caused by their child's death is not only painful but profoundly disorienting-children are not supposed to die. These parents are forced to confront an extremely painful and stressful paradox; they are faced with a situation in which they must deal both with the grief caused by their child's death and with their inherent need to continue to live their own lives as fully as possible. Thus, bereaved parents must deal with the contradictory burden of wanting to be free of this overwhelming pain and yet needing it as a reminder of the child who died.

Bereaved parents continue to be parents of the child who died. They will always feel the empty place in their hearts caused by the child's death; they were, and always will be, the loving father and mother of that child. Yet, these parents have to accept that they will never be able to live their lives with or share their love openly with the child. So they must find ways to hold on to the memories. Many bereaved parents come to learn that memories are the precious gifts of the heart..that they need these memories and whispers, to help create a sense of inner peace, a closeness.

10 Ways To Recover & Move Past Grief
part 2: how to cope with loss

The tragic loss of a loved one, the death of a spouse, the break up of a long and fruitful marriage — life for those over 50 (or anyone) is full of chances for grief, and can easily be wasted on grieving.

Grief is certainly a reality that we must all face but when we go beyond facing it when we sink deeper and deeper into it, we tend to lose sight of other things in life that are more important. We may neglect people who are close to us, alive, and who still need our love. We may drag ourselves to work, there to do nothing but sit and stare out into space all day. We may be wasting away without knowing it, and only because we did not know how to handle grief in the first place

grief is not easy to handle

The long road to recovery is often winding, and can sometimes lead you back to where you started if you are not careful, or if you are too intent on forgetting the cause of your grief. The key to handling grief is to recognize that recovery can be painfully slow, and to know that the faster you get out of it, the less numb you will be. Numbness is not something that you want your heart to experience, because there is more to life than grief: numb your heart, and you will find even the more enjoyable things in life difficult to appreciate.

10 Tips to Follow on the Way to Recovery

How can you handle grief and make your heart better prepared to deal with life in general? Here are ten tips that you might want to follow as you trek the long and winding road to recovery. Note that this list is by no means comprehensive: you can find other ways to heal yourself, and cope with your grieving heart.

How To Cope with Loss Part 1

Some Initial Words About Grief & Loss
part 1: how to cope with loss

Loss is as much a part of human existence as breathing.

It is an everyday event: a lost wallet, earring, investment opportunity. In most cases, we ponder what might have happened, get a little agitated, then quickly move on. But then there are losses that can’t just be shrugged off―voids that trigger a powerful kind of emotional response, like the loss of a child, a sibling, a parent.

Whenever a loss suddenly and irrevocably changes the course of your life, breaking the line from the past you cherished to the future you counted on, the complex feelings of pain you experience can all be classified as grief. “The basic core of grief,” says Holly Prigerson, an associate professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, “is wanting what you can no longer have.” Yet grief is not a standard, one-size-fits-all response to life’s woes. Your reactions will probably differ with every loss you experience―sometimes unpredictably. (The death of a beloved pet, for example, might floor you more than the end of a marriage.) And how we each exhibit grief―emotionally, psychologically, physically―is as varied as our DNA. In fact, research overwhelmingly shows that there is no single, optimal way to grieve a loss, despite our ingrained expectations. Other findings are reassuring, too: The majority of us manage to heal, and many even find a positive outcome to our sadness. “Grief can be a bittersweet beauty,” says Robert A. Neimeyer, a professor of psychology at the University of Memphis. “It’s not something to be banished. It is a human experience to be lived, to be shared, and to be understood and used.”

Kukicha is the Best Kept Secret in the Tea Plant
4/27/2011 2:03:21 PM

The Best Kept Secret in the Tea Plant
kukicha

Little known kukicha tea (茎茶), also known as bancha twig tea or winter tea, is a Japanese blend made of stems, stalks, and twigs.

It is just like green tea, an incredibly healthy derivative of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis.

Kukicha is made from the twigs, stems and coarse leaves of the tea tree, just as green, black and oolong tea is a product of the leaves, and white tea is made from the buds. In Uji Japan, the old tea district located between the ancient capitals of Nara and Kyoto, tea farmers would make kukicha for themselves after selling the more valuable leaves and buds. They developed a precise method for creating this 'peasant's drink'.

Like sencha green tea, there are myriad health benefits of kukicha tea. It is made by first steaming the harvested plant. The twigs are sun dried and then stored in paper bags for two to three years, allowing the flavor to develop. Following the aging process, they are cut to specific lengths, and then grouped according to their grade. Each grade is roasted for different durations and temperatures in order to end with the consistent desired taste of kukicha twig tea - light, nutty and slightly creamy.

Increase Elastin in the Skin

Increase Elastin in the Skin
for supple skin

One simple test for skin aging is to check how long it takes for the skin to snap back after being pinch-pulled away.

Young skin snaps back almost immediately. The old one takes up to several seconds. The reason for such difference is quantity and quality of elastin in the skin.

The amount of elastin in the skin usually peeks in adolescence or early adulthood and declines thereafter. Fibroblasts in older skin have a much reduced capacity to produce new elastin. This deficiency does not appear to be a result of the loss of fibroblasts or mutations in elastin-encoding genes. More likely, age-related changes in the skin's biochemical environment shut down elastin production. Therefore, at least in theory, elastin production can be restored to its youthful levels with proper biochemical signals.

Boosting elastin in the skin is a somewhat neglected topic in skin care. In part, this is a result of excessive focus of cosmetic industry and dermatologic research on collagen - arguably at the expense of elastin. The skin's collagen content and composition can be increased/improved by a number of topical formulas (e.g. ascorbic acid, copper peptides, etc.) as well as procedures (lasers, resurfacing and so forth). Unfortunately, much less is known about boosting the skin's elastin. Yet it is just as important for successful skin rejuvenation. Below I list a few approaches that show at least some promise to restore and/or preserve elastin levels in aging skin. However, as of the time of this writing, none is reliably proven to do so.

Astaxanthin and It's Benefits to the Skin & Body

The Powerful Anti-Aging Antioxidant
astaxanthin

Carotenoids, a large family of antioxidants (some possessing vitamin A activity) are fat-soluble pigments found in red, green, orange, and yellow fruits and vegetables.

You may be most familiar with beta carotene, which is orange. However, one of its cousins, astaxanthin (pronounced asta-ZAN-thin) may be an even more important antioxidant. This red pigment is abundant in nature and is found in marine animals as well as in tiny one-celled plants known as phytoplankton. Astaxanthin appears to go beyond the effects of other carotenoids when it comes to staving off the effects of aging.

Marine biologists have found that tiny reddish crustaceans called krill are protected by astaxanthin from extremely high amounts of ultraviolet (UV)-generated free radicals, intensified at the sea’s surface. Researchers have also discovered high levels of astaxanthin in the eyes of other aquatic creatures, suggesting that it could be the major antioxidant for protecting their vision. These discoveries may have important implications for humans, especially with regard to the aging process.

Prevents Free Radical Damage

Carotenoids are a large class of antioxidants whose minor differences in chemical structure determine where they’re most effective and how they protect us. Astaxanthin imbeds itself in cellular membranes and is unique among carotenoids in that it traps free radicals at both ends of the molecule. Once trapped, free radicals are passed off from astaxanthin into cellular fluids where they’re neutralized by vitamin C.

charles eugster

Dr. Charles Eugster believes exercise has an anti-aging effect.

"Age is not a barrier to fitness", says 91-year-old Dr Charles Eugster, former couch potato now racking up sports medals by the dozen.

“I’m not chasing youthfulness. I’m chasing health. People have been brainwashed to think that after you’re 65, you’re finished. We’re told that old age is a continuous state of decline, and that we should stop working, slow down and prepare to die. I disagree. To me, a 65-year-old is young. I turn 92 this year. It is a frightening prospect – the law of averages is against me, and, yes, one day something will happen and that will be it. But until that day comes, I’m going to carry on working on my abs.”

The Unacceptable Child Obesity Statistics

The Unacceptable Child Obesity Statistics
what can we do?

Childhood obesity statistics in the United States have caught the attention of every aspect of our nation recently.

Between 16 and 33 percent of children and adolescents are obese. Obesity is among the easiest medical conditions to recognize but most difficult to treat. Unhealthy weight gain due to poor diet and lack of exercise is responsible for over 300,000 deaths each year. The annual cost to society for obesity is estimated at nearly $100 billion. Overweight children are much more likely to become overweight adults unless they adopt and maintain healthier patterns of eating and exercise. Over the past three decades, the childhood obesity rate has more than doubled for preschool children aged 2-5 years and adolescents aged 12-19 years, and it has more than tripled for children aged 6-11 years. At present, approximately nine million children over 6 years of age are considered obese.
Trends in childhood and youth obesity mirror a similar profound increase over the same approximate period in U.S. adults as well as a concurrent rise internationally, in both developed and developing countries.

The obesity epidemic affects both boys and girls and has occurred in all age, race, and ethnic groups throughout the United States. In addition to the increase in obesity prevalence, the heaviest group of children is getting heavier whereas the leanest group of children is staying lean. What this means is that among younger age groups of children 6 to 11 years of age, and to a lesser extent adolescents, the lower part of the BMI distribution appears to have changed little over time.

Current Statistics
Overweight and obesity in children are significant public health problems in the United States. The number of adolescents who are overweight has tripled since 1980 and the prevalence among younger children has more than doubled. According to a NHANES survey, 16 percent of children age 6-19 years are overweight. Not only have the rates of overweight increased, but also the heaviest children in a recent NHANES survey were markedly heavier than those in previous surveys.
Those Who Sit For Most of the Day are 54% More Likely to Die From Heart Disease

Sit More & Die From Heart Disease
54% more likely

Scientists at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Louisiana analyzed the lifestyles of more than 17,000 men and women over about 13 years, and found that people who sit for most of the day are 54 percent more likely to die of heart attacks.

That’s right—I said 54 percent.

Masters immediately called the lead researcher at Pennington, a professor named Peter Katzmarzyk. Turns out, this wasn’t the first study to link sitting and
heart disease. Similar research actually dates back to 1953, when British researchers found that (sitting) bus drivers were twice as likely to die of heart attacks as (standing) trolley operators.

Here’s the most surprising part: “We
see it in people who smoke and people who don’t,” Katzmarzyk told Masters. “We see it in people who are regular exercisers and those who aren’t. Sitting is an independent risk factor.”

In other words, it doesn’t matter how much you exercise or how well you eat. If you sit most of the day, your risk of leaving this world clutching your chest—whether you’re a man or women—as much as doubles.

This raised a rather obvious question: Why? Truth is, the researchers aren’t sure. But Marc Hamilton, Ph.D., one of Katzmarkzyk’s colleagues, suspects it has to do with an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase (LPL), which breaks down fat in the bloodstream and turns it into energy. Hamilton found that standing rats have ten times more of the stuff coursing through their bodies than laying rats. It doesn’t matter how fit the rats are; when they leave their feet, their LPL levels plummet. Hamilton believes the same happens in humans.

How To Find The Best Supplement Company
4/11/2011 8:52:10 AM

Find The Best Supplement Company
23 questions to ask

Is there a best dietary supplement company?

There are so many to choose from and they all sound so good--so how can you be sure? Science behind the products is the most important factor, but not any more than safety and efficacy.

When it comes to your health, you want to be sure you’re buying safe, high quality natural products that work in your body and are not a waste of money.

There is no industry regulation for product efficacy

A dietary supplement company is not regulated to do pre-market testing for product efficacy. Even the current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMP) announced by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2007 do not require manufacturers to prove that their natural products work. There is no requirement whatsoever that a dietary supplement undergo clinical tests or trials prior to marketing

Given the fact that natural supplements are used by patients to treat identical health conditions that doctors treat with pharmaceutical drugs (arthritis pain relief, for example), it’s strange that the FDA legislates each method differently.

The FDA does require efficacy for pharmaceutical drugs, but not for natural products.

Does Your Name Shape Your Destiny & Who You Are?

Does Your Name Shape Your Destiny
& who you are?

People have always believed in the power of your name to shape your destiny.

But can it really? And can knowledge of the hidden power of a name help parents pick a 'better' name for their baby?

Several philosophies embody strong beliefs about the significance, and power, behind your name. There is the 'psychological' camp, the 'mystical' camp, the 'religious/spiritual' camp, and the 'sound' camp. All four overlap, but there are real differences.

The psychological approach maintains that your name influences how people perceive you, and this affects how they treat you. In turn, this affects your self-image and self-esteem, from early childhood onward. In its simplest form, a child with an 'unusual' name, such as Archibald, may be continuously teased in school, and this will hurt Archibald's self-image and development. By contrast, an 'Andrew' or a 'Christopher,' both very popular names, are empowering, because other people unconsciously respond to them with a certain level of respect.

Psychological research shows that boys with unusual first names tend to display more emotional disturbances than boys with more traditional names. But, as researchers point out, it is important not to overstate this phenomenon. Are the boys in question more troubled because of their names, or because of the parents, and family background, which gave them strange names in the first place? But certainly, there are many instances where 'desirable' names are shown to lead to greater success.

The Ugly Side of Fish Oil Supplements

The Ugly Side of Fish Oil Supplements
what to be aware of

No matter how many positive benefits can be derived from a supplement, like fish oil, herbals, or vitamins, they also contain a negative side.

Though fish oil is relatively safe to ingest, there are some things you must be aware of. Read on to find out.

Fish Oil Facts

Fish are high in protein, low in cholesterol, and offer fatty acids known as Omega-3's. The human body does not naturally produce Omega-3 acids. Omega-3 is a combination of essential, non-saturated fatty acids:

* Alpha-linolenic acid (ALA)

* Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)

* Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)

One of the most common source for Omega-3, in high concentrations, is from fresh fish. (Omega 3 can also be found in flaxseed, walnuts and almonds.) The human body requires a specific amount of Omega-3 and Omega-6 (from grains and corn) fatty acids to promote proper cellular growth and function. If you do not have the proper amount of fresh fish in your diet, fish oil capsules have become a popular way of providing the necessary ratio of Omega-3s.

If you have opted to start taking fish oil capsules to supplement your Omega-3 intake, there are some possible side effects that may occur and precautions that must be addressed.

DIY Vitamin C Serums For Skin
three recipes

Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants for antiaging.

Potentially, vitamin C can benefit skin in two important ways. Firstly, vitamin C is essential for the synthesis of collagen, a key structural protein of the skin. Adding vitamin C to a culture of skin cells (fibroblasts) dramatically increases the synthesis of collagen. Secondly, vitamin C is an antioxidant and can help reduce skin damage caused by free radicals. So, when vitamin C is properly delivered into skin cells, there is a good chance to reduce wrinkles and improve skin texture.

Extend Your Life 2-14 Years More
7 ways

Six ways to extend your life span. Who doesn't want to live longer? Read on.

live in the country +2

It's official: move to the countryside and you live longer. Men in rural areas on average can expect to celebrate their 78th birthday – two years longer than those in the city – while women will pass 82, almost a year and a half more than their urban peers, new figures show.

The Office for National Statistics, which looked at Britain in the seven years until 2007, examined whether a "rural idyll" populated by older, wealthy migrants from the cities had demonstrable health benefits compared with the life of their urban peers, living in more crowded, less green spaces and served by more pressured public services.

The result was unequivocal. Life expectancy at birth, according to the research, "improved with increasing 'rurality' and those born in village and dispersed areas could expect to live longer than those in town and fringe areas. Even the poorest people fared better in the countryside. Rural poor men lived for a year longer than their urban peers."

Four Reasons Your Body Ages & What You Can Do About It
3/28/2011 10:15:54 AM

4 Reasons Your Body Ages
& your defense

You can slow down your aging process and help stave off heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Here are four theories on the causes of aging and what you can do about it.

free radicals

Free radicals are chemically unstable molecules that attack your cells and damage your DNA. Free radicals disrupt the normal production of DNA and RNA and alter the lipids, or fats, in cell membranes. They also damage cells lining blood vessels and interfere with the production of prostaglandins, which are derived from essential fatty acids and regulate many physiological functions. Partly as a result of free radical damage, aging leads to alteration of proteins (cross-linking). Proteins are complex chains of amino acids that bend into three-dimensional structures. Cross-linking takes place when attachments are formed along the chain in abnormal places, disrupting the protein's function. This leads to poor cell membrane performance in molecular transport, decreased enzyme activity, and inhibition of immune function. The total effect is a variable rate of decline depending on the level of exposure to free radicals.

Defense: The body produces essential antioxidant defenses internally. Enzymes that control free radicals include superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, and catalase, as well as other molecules such as cholesterol, steroid hormones and sulfur-containing amino acids that neutralize free radicals. It is also possible to choose many nutrients in both foods and supplements that help fight free radicals...

Mandelic acid: The New Product in the Search for Gorgeous Skin

Obtain Close To Flawless Skin
with mandelic acid

completely flawless skin does not exist

Mandelic acid is a relatively new alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) derived from bitter almonds that has shown to have tremendous benefits for the skin.

Mandelic acid has a long, safe history of use in medicine as an oral antibiotic, but has only recently become popular in skincare for acne, wrinkles and more. Its use in skincare was pioneered by Dr Fulton, one of the researchers who developed Retin-A. In his view mandelic acid is the best skin active to come along since Retin-A.

Mandelic Acid is a gentler alternative to popular AHAs such as glycolic and lactic acids, because it penetrates the skin at a much slower rate due to its larger molecular structure. Unlike conventional acne treatments that have a potential to irritate the skin, it is great for people with sensitive skin.

Jessica Wu's Amazing Book "Feed Your Face."

The Fabulous Book "Feed Your Face"
by Jessica wu

Harvard-trained dermatologist Jessica Wu, M.D., tends to the skin care needs of some of Hollywood’s most beautiful faces..

including Katherine Heigl, Roma Downey, Maria Bello, and Kimora Lee Simmons. Now, she’s used her expertise to write Feed Your Face: Younger, Smoother Skin and a Beautiful Body in 28 Delicious Days which is receiving amazing reviews from those interested in anti-aging. Here we discuss some of the key points in the book, and enjoy an interview with Jessica Wu.

The Feed Your Face Diet discusses: how to minimize fine lines and wrinkles, boost UV protection, fuel collagen production, heal acne, reduce inflammation, and soothe rashes— organized into a month-long meal plan that takes the fear and stress out of eating for healthier, more beautiful skin.

You will find 28 days' worth of breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snack suggestions. Every meal is easy to prepare and has been designed to provide a balance of antioxidants (to fight free radicals), protein (to fuel collagen production), omega- 3s (to soothe inflammation), and lycopene (for UV protection). While the Feed Your Face Diet will benefit all skin types, Jessica Wu has gone ahead and made some necessary adjustments for certain skin conditions in particular, such as reminding you to avoid dairy if you're pimple- prone, adding more soy if you're worried about fine lines and wrinkles, or avoiding gluten if you suffer from stubborn rashes. The meal plan, however, is merely a way to put the Feed Your Face philosophy into practice— it's designed to take the guesswork out of deciding what to eat, not to tell you what you have to eat. (After all, you'll eventually graduate to preparing your own face-friendly meals.) If you don't like, say, tofu, swap it out for another lean protein such as chicken. Likewise, if you don't care for broccoli, choose a different green veggie instead. Just make sure that you replace any foods you don't like with other healthy proteins, whole grains, and vegetables. (So swap brown rice for quinoa or couscous, not white rice.) Otherwise you might not be getting enough calories, and you'll wind up rummaging through your pantry at two in the morning. Never a good idea.

Toxic Cosmetic Ingredients To Avoid
sixteen

Consumer choice is a powerful thing.

Say "jump or I'll spend my cash somewhere else" and you'll set executives scrambling to use one another as makeshift human trampolines. It's for this reason and this reason alone—at least for the major corporations—that we're seeing such a proliferation of products cheerily proclaiming that they're BPA-free. Well, parabens are the bisphenol-A of the beauty industry, from the scary headlines to the happy proclamations that beam at you when a product has kicked them to the curb.

But parabens aren't the only nasty no-no to avoid. Here are seven other toxic ingredients that regularly hitch a ride on cosmetics and skincare products. Pay heed to these red flags the next time you're out shopping.

Examine the fine print of most personal-care product labels and you're bound to find "fragrance" (or, if you want to get fancy, "parfum"). Because they're considered trade secrets, fragrances fall into a colossal loophole in federal law that doesn't require companies to disclose the potentially hundreds of chemicals in a single product's olfactory-tickling formula.

This simple term can obscure hinky substances tied to myriad health problems, from allergies to endocrine disruption. In 2002, three-quarters of the 72 products tested by the Environmental Working Group contained phthalates, plasticizer chemicals linked to birth defects, feminization of infant boys, liver and kidney damage, and infertility.

The healing properties of the papaya
3/15/2011 9:17:16 AM

Health Benefits of "The Fruit of Angels"
the delicious papaya

Christopher Columbus called papaya the "fruit of the angels".

He noticed that the Caribbean natives ate the fruit after huge meals and never encountered any digestive distress. And they were 'strong'.

The nutritional highlight of papaya is a proteolytic enzyme called papain which is an excellent aid to digestion. This enzyme is so powerful that it is said to digest an amazing 200 times its own weight in protein. It assists our body's own enzymes in assimilating the maximum nutritional value from the food we eat.

The papaya is so rich in vitamins and minerals that in 1992 the Center for Science in Public Interest, a group that does nutritional studies, studied over 40 fruits. They used a point system for not just the vitamins in the fruit but also the fiber and potassium. They ranked the papaya as the highest. Cantaloupe, strawberries, oranges and tangerines followed it.

Papaya has anti-inflammatory properties and anti-cancerous properties. The anti-inflammatory properties in papaya will help reduce pain for those suffering from arthritis, edema and osteoporosis. It is also reported that papaya prevents premature aging. It may be that it works because a poor digestion does not provide enough nutrients to our body.

Papaya contains arginine which is known to be essential for male fertility and also carpain, an enzyme thought to be good for the heart. Fibrin also occurs and this substance is not commonly found in the plant kingdom; in people it forms part of the blood clotting process.

Tamanu Oil's Skin Healing Ability

Tamanu Oil: Unique Skin Healing Abilities
the secret of the vanuatu

Vanuatu is home to one of the best kept skin care secrets in the world - tamanu oil.

This miracle oil has been used for centuries by Native Ni Vanatu as a tropical first aid to promote the formation  of healthy new skin cells.

This magical oil is made from the nuts of the Tamanu Tree is regarded by many as the best in the world. It is only after the fruit of the Tamanu Tree have fallen to the ground naturally that the nuts are collected and dried. Consequently, there is no negative impact on the trees themselves.

Tamanu oil possesses the ability to promote the growth of new tissue, thereby accelerating wound healing and growth of new skin. This process is called cicatrization.
In Pacific Island folk medicine this oil is applied liberally to every kind of skin malady imaginable such as cuts, scrapes, burns, insect bites, acne, psoriasis, diabetic ulcers, sunburn, dry and/or scaly skin, blisters, eczema, and herpes sores such as cold sores. It can eliminate or greatly reduce scarring from acne, burns and other skin trauma. The Polynesian natives even use it to reduce foot and body odor. The antibiotic properties as well as anti inflammatory and
antioxidant properties in it are helpful for looking younger.

Parasols Are a Fashionable Way To Protect Your Skin From the Sun

Protect Skin From the Sun Fashionably
with a parasol

The parasol is being touted as the must-have accessory for spring and the return of sunshine, but this trend is dipping back into history by thousands of years.

In the old days, you could judge a lady by the fairness of her skin, while Asian women have always been praised for their porcelain tan. What do the English rose and a Geisha have in common? Parasols of course.

A parasol is defined in Webster's as “a lightweight umbrella used as a sunshade, especially by women”. While parasols have often been thought of as wedding accessories or for period costumes, they are also for fun and fashionable. They are very elegant and make a definite fashion statement. Parasols are also practical and provide UV protection from the sun's harmful rays, and excessive sun exposure is the leading cause of skin aging and skin damage.

Get Beautiful White Teeth Naturally

Get Beautiful White Teeth
naturally

We all want to flash that bright gleaming white smile we admire our movie and television stars for having.

And many have tried the professional route with whiteners applied by our dentist (very expensive) or store bought so called magic applications that promise “amazing results” but simply do not do as much to whiten up our teeth as we anticipated. Those of us who are frugal minded (and today who isn’t?) want to find practical ways to accomplish what we need but at affordable prices and even for free if possible. Natural tooth whiteners are the way to go. They do the job and they're cheap.

Even though natural whiteners are milder than bleaches, don't overuse them. Teeth and gums are sensitive, and you will be absorbing some of whichever topical product you use.

The strawberry method

Strawberries are proven to have teeth whitening properties. When rubbed on daily they are a good stain remover and will also whiten the enamel.
1. Cut one strawberry in half so it can fit in your mouth. Cut in half again if necessary.
2. Hold it by the skin so the inside is facing towards you. Rub it over your teeth until they are pinkish.
3. Leave on for about 5 - 10 minutes and then brush off with your regular toothpaste. You should brush twice a day. When you wake up and before you go to bed.
This method might be difficult at times as strawberries aren't available all the time.

Ceramides Keep Skin Beautiful & Hydrated
3/3/2011 7:19:24 AM

Ceramides Keep Skin Healthy & Hydrated
the best ones to use

Ceramides are lipid molecules that make up over 30 percent of the top layer of the epidermis in your skin, called the stratum corneum.

Ceramide helps form skin's protective barrier, called the "ceramide" barrier. The barrier helps maintain overall skin health and guards skin from the external aggressions and dehydration. All of these lipids also help keep your skin moist and smooth.

Some research studies have shown that topical products containing this ingredient can be highly effective in improving certain skin conditions.

Damage to lipids and the ceramide barrier affects your skin cells ability to function normally. Your skin can become irritated and sensitive. A weakened barrier puts you at greater risk of infection and other skin diseases. You may also notice that your skin gets dryer. The dryness can increase the appearance of fine lines and make wrinkles appear larger and deeper.

The benefits of ceramide products are due to specialized lipids (fat soluble bioactive nutrients) that protect the skin in several ways.

-They act as free radical scavengers (neutralize free radicals)
-They promote skin hydration and moisture
-They trigger new skin cell growth
-Inhibit “elastase” which is an enzyme that breaks down the elastin in your skin and causes skin aging
-Acts as a potent anti-inflammatory
-Believed to trigger “apoptosis” and destroy cancer cells in your skin
-Decreases dry, flaky, and itchy skin

Study: A Wandering Mind Makes You Unhappy

A Wandering Mind Makes You Unhappy
study says

People spend 46.9 percent of their waking hours thinking about something other than what they’re doing, and this mind-wandering typically makes them unhappy.

So says a study that used an iPhone Web app to gather 250,000 data points on subjects’ thoughts, feelings, and actions as they went about their lives.

The research, by psychologists Matthew A. Killingsworth and Daniel T. Gilbert of Harvard University, is described this week in the journal Science. “A human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind,” Killingsworth and Gilbert write. “The ability to think about what is not happening is a cognitive achievement that comes at an emotional cost.”

Unlike other animals, humans spend a lot of time thinking about what isn’t going on around them: contemplating events that happened in the past, might happen in the future, or may never happen at all. Indeed, mind-wandering appears to be the human brain’s default mode of operation.

To track this behavior, Killingsworth developed an iPhone app that contacted 2,250 volunteers at random intervals to ask how happy they were, what they were currently doing, and whether they were thinking about their current activity or about something else that was pleasant, neutral, or unpleasant.

Get A Beautiful Natural Glow
the best natural sunless tanners

A golden tan is very desirable but if you're like me you don't want to jeopordize your skin's health for a tan.

If you look at many sunless tanners you'll find many highly questionable ingredients:

Water, dihydroxyacetone, glycerin, methylpropanediol, sorbitol, ethylhexyl hydroxystearate benzoate, C12-15 alkyl benzoate, methyl gluceth-20 benzoate, glycerl stearate, PEG-100 stearate, cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol, magnesium aluminum silicate, xanthan gum, tetrasodium EDTA, sodium citrate, polysorbate 20, hydroxyethl acrylate/sodium acryloydimethyltautate copolymer, squalane, polysorbate 60, citric acid, phenoxyethanol, methylparaben, ethylparaben, butylparaben, propylparaben, isobutylparaben, BHT, fragrance.

Ingredients that you leave you wondering if you are causing just as much skin damage as the sun does. The studies show you are. And not only that, some of the ingredients such as parabens can alter your hormones and even cause cancer.

After hours of searching the internet, here are some of the best natural sunless tanners I've come accross.

Ways To Help Dry Skin Stay Moisturized

Ways to Help Dry Skin Stay Moisturized
in the winter especially

Some people experience dry skin on a seasonal basis, especially in winter, and others seem to have it year round.

Dry skin is one of the more frustrating skin problems. Ideally, your skin gets saturated with moisture from your sweat glands and tissues that lie beneath the skin, and oil produced by the skin's sebaceous glands seals the deal by holding onto that moisture. But when your body has trouble holding in the water and oil that it needs to keep skin moist, you end up with dry skin.

Dry skin might be accompanied by itching or rash. Some of the key causes of this condition include fairly constant exposure to low humidity environments, especially those who use central air or heating, taking frequent long hot showers and baths or washing facial skin with hot water, age (dryness increases as people age), sun damage, and exposure to chemicals in soaps and detergents. There are medical causes of skin dryness too, and chief among these is hypothyroidism.

Here are the best known ways to help dry skin stay supple and beautiful.

aloe vera

Aloe Vera is very beneficial for dry skin. The medicinal properties of this plant have been found to contain ingredients that are known to stop pain and itching. It also prevents infection in cracked or raw dry skin. It has been used for ages for wounds, minor burns, and itchy skin treatment. The leaves of aloe vera plant contains about 96% water and other active ingredients like essential oils, amino acids, minerals, vitamins, enzymes and glycoproteins. All these ingredients help in providing natural glow to the skin and in retaining moisture of the dry skin even in harsh climates. Apply fresh Aloe Vera juice or Aloe Vera gel to the skin. Aloe vera gel are available in health care shops.

To use the gel directly from the plant, simply break off a leaf. You can squeeze a small amount of gel out of the broken end, or you can use a small knife to cut the outer skin of the leaf to access more of the gel.

A Warm House Could Be Making You Fat

Having a Warm House Could Make You Fat
new study finds

Experts say many of us now keep our homes so cozy that we no longer have to burn as many calories to naturally warm up our bodies.

The study finds that modern centrally heated homes are helping to send obesity rates soaring. Scientists from University College London say it is an increasing problem across the developed world where average indoor temperatures are constantly rising.

The recent study out of the journal Obesity Reviews notes that it's not just diet and activity levels that have changed in correlation with rising obesity numbers, but ambient temperature. Central heating became common in developing countries including the U.S. and U.K. around the 1960’s. Now commonly people are heating their homes at all hours of the day, even as they sleep, and spending less time outdoors exposed to the elements. Central heating is more common, while space heaters, fireplaces, and electric heaters are less common, meaning the entire house gets and stays warm. People in developed countries exist in relative thermoneutrality: a nice 68-72 degrees F. The authors guess that with less exposure to thermal stress, we’re burning fewer calories. Our bodies have an easier time regulating our internal temperatures, and expend less energy doing so.

And its impact on weight is made worse by the extra time we now spend indoors, whether working from home, watching TV or shopping online. Even when we do venture out, it is often via heated cars or other transport to offices and workplaces where the temperature is carefully controlled by air conditioning units.

The research said there was a direct link between ‘reduced exposure to seasonal cold and increases in obesity in the UK and U.S.’.

8 Powerful Aphrodisiacs From Food
2/16/2011 5:54:58 AM

Nature's Aphrodisiacs From Food
8 foods

Named after Aphrodite--the Greek goddess of sexual love and beauty--an aphrodisiac is a food, drink, drug, scent, or device that supposedly has powers to increase sexual desire, or libido.

Foods that are exotic or suggestive of certain body parts are especially desirable as aphrodisiacs. The avocado tree, for example, was called a "testicle tree" by the Aztecs because its fruit hangs in pairs. And its aphrodisiac value is based on this resemblance. The phallus-shaped carrot has been associated with sexual stimulation since ancient times and was used by early Middle Eastern royalty to aid seduction. The fig it another fruit that claims to be an aphrodisiac, based on its appearance.

The use of food as an aphrodisiac may be more truth than myth. Take oysters, for example. Oysters were first called aphrodisiacs by the ancient Romans who wrote about the immoral behavior of women who ate them. For one thing, oysters are high in zinc, which are supposed to increase sperm count. For another, they're high in omega-3 fatty acids, which improves  nervous system function. The banana is another. Considered an aphrodisiac due to its shape, bananas are rich in potassium and B vitamins, which are said to be necessary for sex-hormone production.

There's more: A healthy diet promotes weight loss and thus holds libido-boosting potential. Obesity is a known risk factor for erectile dysfunction and low testosterone, so peeling off pounds can help pump out more testosterone, and thus enhance sexual function. Slimming down simply makes anyone, man or woman, feel better about themselves and sexually more desirable.

Myth or truth? Maybe foods really do deliver. If so, here are some foods that may kick-start your love life:

dark chocolate

Chocolate is widely renowned as the king of aphrodiasics. Pure chocolate contains anandamide which is a chemical that gives the consumer a natural psychoactive good feeling. Perhaps more importantly it contains phenylethylamine (PEA) which is the 'love chemical that releases dopamine in the brain's pleasure centers and this can peak during orgasm, in addition it induces excitable feelings and stimulates both attraction and euphoria. Cacao also contains tryptophan, a key component of the neurotransmitter serotonin known to promote a sense of wellbeing and relaxation.  Chocolate’s arousing effects can also be attributed to its stimulant properties, which can also be achieved by drinking a cup of caffeinated tea. This is without a doubt top of the list of aphrodisiac foods.

Boost Your Sex Drive Naturally
8 herbs

The sex drive diminishes for many reasons, one being age.

A diminishing sex drive is like a wave goodbye to youth. But it doesn't have to be this way. Natural and holistic treatments are highly effective to increase sexual drive and can serve as natural aphrodisiacs
to promote sexual arousal and bring passion back into your life. This article specifically discusses eight herbs. Herbs have been used as sexual stimulants for centuries and are not only gentle but can help to benefit the entire body.

damiana
Of all its reputed benefits, Damianas ability to boost a flagging libido has caused the most scientific interest especially as it has been found to have benefits in this area for both men and women.

Argentinian scientists from the Faculty of Pharmacy and Biochemistry, University of Buenos Aires, studied Damiana, in addition to several other plant extracts, and found that it had potent aphrodisiac properties.

For men, their research confirmed that the plant is able to improve sexual dysfunction in men by relaxing the small muscles within the walls of the arteries of the penis. This is important because when the arteries are relaxed they widen and allow more blood to pass through them, which is what causes an erection. This is exactly how Viagra works, but fortunately the similarity between the two ends here, as Damiana does not cause the drugs harmful side effects.

The scientists also found that all of the plants studied, including Damiana, relaxed the arteries of the penis by 90 per cent on average, whereas Viagra caused only a moderate degree of relaxation barely reaching 46 per cent (Phytomedicine. 2003 Nov; 10(8):669-74).

Flax seeds for Ultra Wellness

The Key to Ultra Wellness
flax seeds

Gandhi said, "Wherever flaxseed becomes a regular food item among the people, there will be better health."

The benefits of Flax were known to the Ancients. Hippocrates recommended eating them for inflammations of the mucous membranes. In the 8th-century King Charlemagne of France actually passed a law requiring his subjects to eat flax to stay healthy.

Flax seed is the richest source of omega 3 found in nature. It contains lignans that have anti-viral, anti-bacterial, anti-fungal and anti-cancer properties. Flax seeds have the richest source of lignans, 100 times more than the next best source, wheat bran. The majority of lignans is found in the seed, giving it an advantage over flax oil. Flax seed also contains lecithin which emulsifies fat and cholesterol. These little seeds improve digestion, help stabilize blood glucose levels, fight tumor formation and enhance cardiovascular health.

Whole flax seed (ground meal, powder or intact seed) contains 28% dietary fiber, (7 – 10% soluble fiber, 11 - 18% insoluble fiber), 40% fat (73% of it being polyunsaturated fatty acids), and 21% protein. Other flax seed nutrients include vitamins E and B, sterols, and mineral nutrients such as calcium, magnesium, iron, and potassium. More than 50% of the fat in flax seed is an essential fatty acid called omega-3 fatty acid (alpha-linolenic acid, ALA ), which stated above makes flax seed the richest plant source of omega-3 fatty acid. Flax seed is rich in antioxidants, such as lignans (also a phytosterogen) and other phenolic molecules.

flax fights cholesterol

The consumption of flaxseed is associated with a reduction in total cholesterol, including the LDL (bad) cholesterol and triglycerides. Study after study has shown a positive response to eating ground flax seed daily. Eating low fat foods, increasing your exercise, limiting the salt, sugar and eating flax seed daily are a few ways that you can win the battle against high cholesterol.

flax fights diabetes

Nutritionists are instructing their diabetic patients to eat flax daily. It has been discovered that the omega-3 fat and high fiber in flax may play a role in the fight against diabetes. In a study conducted by the University of Toronto, participants who ate flaxseed bread had blood sugar levels 28% lower an hour after eating than their counterparts who ate bread without flax seeds.

5 Quick Exercises to do at Your Desk
for better health

In today's world, many people work long hours behind their desk at the office just to make ends meet.

Stress, convenience foods, and a seemingly forced sedentary lifestyle can wreak havoc on your health and your waistline. There are, however, ways of combating the office-worker bulge. With these five simple exercises, you will be able to retain more muscle tone, get the circulation moving, and keep your metabolism high.

Exercise One - Side Stretches

To help whittle your waist and keep your spine aligned and supple, side stretches are excellent exercises to do at your desk. With your arms raised over your head or akimbo with your hands on your hips, lean gently over to each side as far as you can safely go. Please use caution if your chair is unstable or if it is on wheels. You can do this a few times on each side at several times throughout the day.

Dr. Perricone's Recommendations for Youth
foods & supplements

A brilliant scholar, Dr. Perricone, MD, FACN, completed medical school in just 3 years, graduating with distinction.

He completed his internship in Pediatrics at Yale Medical School and his Dermatology Residency at Ford Medical Center. Dr. Perricone is regarded as the Father of the Inflammation Theory of Aging.

After years of research, Dr. Perricone arrived at the conclusion that cellular inflammation may be the underlying cause of wrinkles. According to Dr. Perricone, this inflammation is not the redness that is visible to the naked eye but rather microscopic irritation that takes place in your cells leading to cellular damage. He believes that this inflammation is responsible for skin-related problems like breakouts, wrinkles, and loss of firmness.

Dr. Perricone’s holistic approach to aging treats this inflammation in three ways: diet, nutriceutical supplements, and his award-winning line of skin care products and cosmeceuticals. This article isn't to promote Dr. Perriocone's specific line of products, but just the supplements and foods themselves. All of them can be bought on Amazon for a lot cheaper. The effects of Dr. Perricone's recommendations are not only visible externally but will enhance your life with better overall health and increased energy.

Eat your Sunscreen: Foods That Work as an Internal Sunscreen
2/8/2011 5:41:55 AM

What to Eat to Block UV Rays
edible sunscreen

Mother nature has provided us with sunscreens that don't come in plastic bottles, but rather their own yummy, colorful and biodegradable packages.

For most people, sunscreen is synonymous with sun protection. Although the importance of external sun protection (worn year round) through creams, lotions and sun protective clothing is indisputable, natural sun protection through consumption of antioxidant rich foods takes sun protection to an entirely new level. Excessive exposure to the sun can damage the skin and increase the risk of developing skin cancer. Several studies demonstrate that eating antioxidant dense foods internally fortify the skin and increase its ability to become more tolerant to ultraviolet (UV) exposure.

dark chocolate

Chocolate is packed with antioxidants found in its cocoa flavonoids. These flavonoids safeguard your skin against photo damage. Be aware, though, that milk chocolate does not have the same effect because milk prevents the absorption of
polyphenols, or plant chemicals that have antiinflammatory and antibacterial capabilities. Buy dark chocolate with a low content of sugar.

black, white & green tea

All of these teas contain polyphenols that help fight the battle against UV rays. However, green tea has more epigallocatechin–3–gallate (EGCG), the most powerful polyphenol of them all. You can say EGCG is a multitasking chemical that slows down sun-related skin aging, prevents skin cancer, and inhibits tumor cells. What’s also interesting is green tea contains L-theanine, an amino acid that helps you relax. It also means that it can stop the production of stress hormone, cortisol, from destroying collagen fibers.

A Beauty Secret From Africa

Another Beauty Secret From Africa
black soap

Africa's Best Kept Beauty Secret or should I say secrets are not just limited to Shea butter.

Black Soap or African Black Soap also known as Anago Soap or Alata soap, originates from West Africa and is claimed to be one of the healthiest and most beneficial soaps you can use on your skin and hair. It has been used for centuries in Ghana. It's methods and secrets have been passed down from generation to generation to keep the soap close to mother nature and avoid exploitation & imitations. Many have tried to create their version of black soap with all kinds of ingredients.

African black soap is especially recommended for the very young and the elderly, or anyone with tender skin. The main benefits behind african black soap are its superior antiseptic properties.

What Exactly is Black Soap?

Black Soap comes from plantain skin. It is a natural source of vitamins A & E and iron. (In case you don't know what a plantain is. Plantain is a popular food in Africa, South America & other parts of the world. It can be found in ethnic or international grocery stores such as Latino, Caribbean or African. It looks like banana but much bigger. It does not taste like a banana & has to be cooked before eating) The skin of the plantain is gingerly dried to a precise texture under the hot African sun. It is then roasted in a clay oven (although you can purchase raw black soaps). The heat must be constant in order to achieve a particular color, texture & smell. In some recipes, cocoa pod is used instead of or in a addition to plantain skins. Cocoa pod is the shell of the cocoa fruit. The cocoa beans are used for making chocolate or cocoa butter among other things.
Get rid of Food Poisoning

Kick Food Poisoning in the Butt
with these tips

Every year, millions of Americans report illnesses that can be traced to foods they have eaten.

As many as 9,000 deaths occur annually from all types of food poisoning and many cases lead to chronic health disorders. Food poisoning is caused by eating foods contaminated by harmful organisms, such as bacteria, parasites, or viruses. Symptoms of food poisoning usually occur an hour to a few days after eating the contaminated food. The symptoms include nausea,
vomiting, severe headache, diarrhea, fatigue, gastric distress and the like. In rare cases, serious food poisoning agents such as salmonella, E. coli or botulism can cause severe medical problems for the elderly, young children, or those with compromised immune systems. It is vitally important to treat symptoms of food poisoning as soon as they appear.

complete bedrest

Many cases of food poisoning are caused by parasites or bacteria, which enter the body by the thousands or millions immediately after one ingests contaminated food. As a defense mechanism, your body should begin to send out
antibodies to combat the invasion. All of this takes time, however, so victims of food poisoning need to minimize other activities in order to allow the body to heal itself. Get as much rest as you possibly can.
